In this story, two of David’s men were loyal to him whilst he was in exile. One was loyal next to him (Barzillai), whilst the other was loyal from a distance (Methibisesh). This talk outlines how they were both loyal to David and the parallels between King David’s character and Jesus.
Faithful Behind Lines- Mephibosheth spent the whole duration of David’s exile back in the city of Jerusalem being loyal to David the whole time. This was contrary to what David had been told by Ziba, who deceived David into thinking Mephibosheth had betrayed David and joined Absalom. However, this current point in the story begins to show the truth that Mephibosheth had in fact been faithful to David as he had not attended to himself or blended in happily with the rest of the city to Absalom, since the day David left until the day he returned. Mephibosheth was showing his love to the true king – The one God had given to Israel. He had a hunger and yearning to see god’s true King return and one of the ways he demonstrated this is through keeping unkempt in his appearance. This can be related to fasting and spiritual hunger. Through neglecting fleshly desires, a spiritual yearning for God strengthens. This is an inspiration to Christians. Those who have said to Jesus I trust and follow you, have become deeply connected to King Jesus. We see other less righteous and less pure authority figures in place in our culture and it feels like we are out of step. When you meet Jesus and realise there is no one else like him- perfect, forgiving and that he has died and risen for you, the other things of the world become less important and you start to see things as God sees them. Until King Jesus is back completely- you will never completely fit in. Furthermore, the history of Mephibosheth adds another layer into this story, as he is Saul’s (David’s enemy) grandson. However, David adopts Mephibosheth into his own family after both his father and grandfather died in battle. He welcomes him into his own family. This can be linked to how Jesus welcoming us, sons of Adam, into his royal family by dying for us and bringing us into his inheritance.
2. Faithful To The Finish – Barzillai is characterised by faithfulness at great risk. He looks after David when there are people hunting for him and put his own life at risk by being associated with Jesus. Barzillai at the end goes back to his hometown in his old age but looks to the next generation and asks David to take care of his son, Chimham- to which he did. Barzillai teaches us how to age well- looking ahead focusing on the bigger picture which is Christ and his kingdom. The things we do for God that may seem feeble- God’s burning gaze is upon you. He sees it all. If you’re eyes are on this passing age you will be disappointed.
