Crisis of Confidence // A Guide to an Empowered Life / 02. Empowered... In the Gospel - Neville Jones // Romans 1:16
02. Empowered... In the Gospel - Neville Jones // Romans 1:16
In this day and age many people feel that Christianity is irrelevant. To find empowerment today we need to have greater self-esteem, tell ourselves we can do it and manifest our goals.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ starts from a very different place, in fact an opposite place. In the Gospel we find strength in our weakness. It may seem like, ‘foolishness to the Greeks’, but the power of God begins at the end of ourselves.
Discussion Questions:
1. The sermon emphasises that the gospel is about what has already happened, not what we need to do. How does this perspective change your view of your relationship with God?
2. Neville says, "You can't look inward and just think I'll try a bit harder. The answers really are inside of me. They're not. They're in Christ." How does this challenge common self-help philosophies? How might it impact your approach to personal growth?
3. The talk discusses our identity as "God's chosen ones, holy and beloved." How does embracing this identity affect your daily life and decision-making?
4. How does understanding God's grace and love for you motivate you to change, as opposed to following rules out of obligation?
5. How can we balance being confident in sharing the gospel while also being sensitive to others in our increasingly diverse society?
Here are some ways you could apply this talk:
This week, try to catch yourself when you're tempted to "try harder" in your spiritual life. Instead, take a moment to reflect on your identity in Christ and ask for His strength.
Write down your personal story of how Jesus has impacted your life. Practice sharing it with a friend or family member.
Choose one area where you struggle with change. Spend time meditating on God's love and grace for you in that specific area, asking Him to transform your desires.
Look for an opportunity to "shine" Christ's light in a practical way this week, whether through an act of kindness, words of encouragement, or sharing your faith story.
